Whose DNA Do I Have? Why Does Genetics Matter?

Most people know that we inherit 1/2 of our genetic makeup from our mothers and 1/2 from our fathers. We are just as related to our brothers and sisters as we are to our parents, sharing 1/2 of our DNA. An exception to this is Identical twins who share 100% of the same genetic makeup.

As one might expect, the more distant the family relationship, the fewer genes you will have in common with that family member. For example, you share about 1/4 of your DNA with each of your grandparents. You share 1/8 of your DNA with your first cousins and 1/16 with your second cousins. The genetic relationship continues to decrease by 1/2 the further down your family tree that you go.
